When the Port of Tacoma needed to build its new $17.6 million container shipping terminal in 1998, it turned to us. ICON Materials (then called M.A. Segale, Inc.) was given the task of paving the 70-acre terminal and building its rail depot. We placed more than 215,000 tons of crushed rock, 193,000 tons of asphalt, 42,000 square yards of concrete; we laid 10,000 track feet of rail; we supervised sub-contractors for the underground storm sewers, sanitary sewer, domestic and fire water systems and electrical ductbanks. All while coordinating with two other general contractors who built the site's structures at the same time. Yet it came off without a hitch: the facility, now known as the Washington United Terminal, opened on time and is now expanding Tacoma's overseas trade.
